In our practice, there are always some patients wearing so-called self-ligating silver braces. They are usually the Damon series from Ormco or Innovation from GAC.

Clear (so-called invisible) plastic aligner digital systems (eg Invisalign, Clear-smile or eCligner) have been marketed for the last ten years.

Removable plates are commonly used as retainers after active first phase or full-braces treatment.

In our practice, we have had patients in upper and lower lingual braces for some years. In fact, Michael Woods first practised lingual orthodontics

Normal silver braces are the most commonly-used braces for teenagers. These modern braces have many digitally-derived technical features built into them.

We have been using clear ceramic braces for many years. At present , we are using Clarity SL (self-ligating) from 3M Unitek.

RETENTION - IN MANY WAYS, JUST AS IMPORTANT AS THE ACTIVE TREATMENT. Retention simply means the holding-on after teeth have been aligned and bites corrected.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will I need to wear metal braces?

Most patients wear metal braces for 12 to 24 months, depending on the complexity of their case. Professor Woods will give you a realistic timeframe during your consultation. Simple alignment issues often resolve faster, while complex bite problems may take longer. We'll monitor your progress closely and keep you updated throughout treatment.

Will metal braces be painful?

You might feel some pressure and mild discomfort for a few days after getting braces or having them adjusted. This is completely normal—it means your teeth are moving! Most patients find any discomfort manageable with over-the-counter pain relief. The feeling typically subsides within a week, and many patients quickly forget they're wearing braces.

Do I need to have teeth removed?

Not necessarily. At Michael Woods Orthodontics, we often achieve excellent results without extractions by using modern expansion techniques. Professor Woods specialises in creating space through careful treatment planning rather than removing healthy teeth. However, in cases of severe crowding, extractions might provide the best long-term outcome. We'll discuss all options during your consultation.

Can adults get metal braces?
Absolutely! About 25% of orthodontic patients are adults who want to improve their smile and oral health. Metal braces work effectively at any age, though adult treatment may take slightly longer as bones are fully developed. Many adults in our Malvern practice choose metal braces because they're reliable, cost-effective, and deliver excellent results.
How do I keep my teeth clean with braces?
Cleaning around braces requires extra attention, but it becomes routine quickly. We'll teach you proper brushing techniques and provide special tools like interdental brushes and floss threaders. The key is brushing after every meal and using fluoride mouthwash daily. Our team provides ongoing support and tips throughout your treatment.
What foods should I avoid?
Hard, sticky, and chewy foods can damage brackets and wires. Avoid nuts, popcorn, sticky lollies, hard crusty bread, and ice. Cut corn off the cob and slice apples instead of biting into them directly. Don't worry—there are still plenty of delicious foods you can enjoy, and we'll provide a comprehensive list during your first appointment.
How often do I need appointments?
You'll visit us every 6 to 8 weeks for adjustments and progress checks. These appointments usually take 15-30 minutes and are essential for keeping your treatment on track. We'll schedule appointments around your routine, whether that's after school, work, or weekend availability. Regular visits ensure the best possible results.
Will people notice my braces?
Modern metal braces are much smaller and less noticeable than older versions. While they're visible, many patients feel proud wearing them because they know they're working towards a beautiful smile. If discretion is a priority, ask about our ceramic braces or Invisalign options during your consultation.
What happens after my braces come off?

Once we remove your braces, you'll wear a retainer to maintain your new smile. Teeth naturally want to shift back to their original position, so retainers are crucial for long-term success. We'll provide detailed retainer care instructions and schedule follow-up visits to ensure your beautiful new smile lasts forever.
