Academic Appointments and Activity

Michael Woods is currently Professor and senior consultant in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Unit at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

He was previously Professor and Inaugural Chair of Orthodontics at the University of Melbourne.

As a young clinical academic, he was Visiting Assistant Professor in Orthodontics at the University of Oklahoma, USA.

In 2014, he had 5 peer-reviewed articles published in the international literature.

In November 2013, he was named Visiting Professor in Orthodontics at the University of Western Australia in Perth.

Since 2012, he has been invited to act as Visiting Professor in Orthodontics at James Cook University in Cairns – with four separate teaching visits.

In 2014, he made three invited visits to the University of Queensland in Brisbane.

In 2014/15, he has acted on the Review panels for the following journals: American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (4 articles), Angle Orthodontist (4 articles), Australian Orthodontic Journal (2 articles), (British) Journal of Orthodontics (1 article) and European Journal of Orthodontics (1 article).

In 2015, he will be the visiting examiner for the Doctoral program in orthodontics at the University of Adelaide.

He is presently undertaking a detailed review of all orthognathic surgery operations undertaken at the Royal Melbourne Hospital over the past 25 years.

 He is also currently writing papers on:

Arch-form changes with orthodontic treatment,

Class III surgical and non-surgical management,

The effects of fixed and removable functional appliances,

Muscular aspects of craniofacial growth,

Three-dimensional CAT scan facial imaging and

The future of stem-cell research in craniofacial growth.

In 2016, Professor Woods will present his work at: the Australian Society of Orthodontists Foundation meeting in Hobart, the EH Angle Society of Orthodontists North Atlantic component meeting in Nashville, USA, the University of Oklahoma, the 100th Anniversary Biennial meeting of the EH Angle Society in Pasadena, USA the World Federation of Orthodontists meeting in London, UK the Milton Sims Fellowship symposium for the University of Adelaide, the World Congress on Oral Health in Dalian, China, as well as for the Australian Dental Association (Victorian Branch) in Melbourne.

He has previously been an invited or key-note speaker at most of the major dental and orthodontic congresses around the world.
